Strawberry Overview
It was a welcome change to comfortably make my rounds of animals and greenhouses this morning in my shirtsleeves!
Could this be it? Has the last frost happened? Is spring really here? It has been a challenging winter.
We were often thankful for Scriptures promise,” While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
And sure enough , the barn swallows have migrated back, green leaves are pushing on the oaks, peaches and apples have bloomed, and of considerable interest to us, and also many of you, the strawberries are in full bloom!!
When you stand looking across 3.5 acres of white blooms, listening to a few thousand honeybees hard at work and feeling the sun’s warmth on your face, it becomes more difficult to remember the effort required to get to this point. 🙂
The frost covers are still rolled in the field, just in case, but we are close to the end of the week of the average last frost for the area, so, maybe…
We did lose some blooms. Back in early March, when the buds were tightly curled and down deep in the plant structure, we lost close to 5 buds per plant on that low teens night. Then only a week and a half ago, after an all day rain and very cold night, some blooms frosted that were pasted tight to the covers.
There is a profusion of white across the patch that points to an avalanche of berries about mid May, with maybe a May 10th patch opening and slightly smaller (read more manageable) Family Farm Day on May 24th.
Dawson With Some Large Tomatoes
Here are a few other things that are on our minds; The sweet corn is mostly planted (or transplanted), tomatoes are in good supply, and there is even some asparagus available! O yes, hidden away in our new, small, greenhouse I saw some small Cherokee Purple tomatoes this morning!
To Wrap This All Up
- We will be sending out an email a bit closer to Strawberry Opening (you can sign up for that right here)
- Most general info will be pushed to Facebook first. So if you haven’t already liked our page you might consider doing that. Here is a direct link.
Wishing you all a good day,
Delvin, for all of us at Yoders’ Farm
