Good evening everyone,
It’s May 21, 2015 and it’s time for a little update from the farm.
This post will cover the following things.
- Details on Our “Not Family Farm Day Farm Day”
- A bit about Strawberries/Tomatoes/The Farm Store
- Strawberry/Tomatoes/The Farm Store Hours (Memorial Day)
So, with no further ado let’s jump right into it!
Details on Our “Not Family Farm Day Farm Day”
We tried to structure some things a bit differently around our strawberry season this year than we have in past years. May is a super busy/amazing/stressful time of the year and it seemed best to cut some things out, if we could, while restructuring the things that we couldn’t cut out.
One thing that came up was our spring Family Farm Day. After talking through the options we decided that instead of having one Saturday with a bunch of special things, we would try to have a couple of Saturdays with one specific special thing.
Well… despite our best efforts it suited best for our friends who do the pony rides, balloon twisting, and food to all show up on the same day – May 23.
This Saturday, May 23rd we plan to have the following things available for your enjoyment.
- Pony rides from about 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. weather permitting. Pony rides provided by Patrick Henry Family Services and will cost $5 each.
- Balloon Dude Travis will be here twisting balloons from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m.
- Rosie’s Cozy Kitchen will also be set up here selling awesome subs, pie by the slice, etc. from 10 a.m. till some time in the afternoon.
A Bit About Strawberries/Tomatoes/The Farm Store
The strawberry patch continues to chug along. We were quite surprised and pleased at how nicely the patch responded after being picked out last Saturday and then having day of rest on Sunday. Strawberries were meant to bloom and bear fruit over several weeks time… We anticipate fair picking the remainder of this week, though when we get a lot of pickers the patch production can be overwhelmed. Definitely check Facebook before you come, as that will be the first place we post if we need to close the patch early. Right now it looks like we should be picking strawberries into the first part of June, so if you can’t come this week don’t despair just yet!
The tomatoes have really enjoyed the warmer weather over the past week or two; We’ve enjoyed forgetting about firing the wood boiler to keep them warm! In fact we are now installing our shade material on the greenhouses to reduce the heat inside. The last option in cooling is using the wet walls for evaporative cooling – a step we will take in several weeks. Tomato supplies are good, with the classic hydroponic beefsteak, Trust, being the offering presently. However, our hydro heirlooms are sizing up nicely and we hope for Cherokee Purple, Hawaiian Pineapple, and Big Beef varieties over the next month.
Interest in the Farm Store is infectious and many folks have stopped in over the strawberry season, sampling our baked goods, tomatoes and jams and jellies. Apple supplies are almost depleted with our supplier, Seamans Orchards, having pretty much processed all of last falls apples. Fall is just around the corner though!
Strawberry/Tomatoes/The Farm Store Hours
- Hours at the farm are normal the remainder of the week (8 a.m. till 7 p.m. and closed on Sunday.) As mentioned above, it’s always best to check Facebook before you come, as that will be the first place we post if we need to close the patch early.
- Hours on Monday (Memorial Day) will be 8 a.m. till 3 p.m. so we can spend some time together with our family.
That’s pretty much it!
Again we feel incredibly blessed to be able to work with each one of you. We’ve said it before, but we are keenly aware of it in times like this, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the help and support of each one of our fabulous customers. The positive (and constructive) feedback we’ve received from so many of you really validates what we are doing and how we are doing it.
So thanks.
P.S. If something isn’t clear feel free comment below, or contact us and we’ll see if we can clear it up…
