Some Flowers Enjoying the Rain
It’s a lovely damp morning here on Yoders’ Farm.
The Rain
The rain gauge tells me that over 4 inches of rain has fallen since last Sunday morning; a genuine blessing for the acres of soybeans just popping up in neat rows across the farm. The alfalfa hay-field we just harvested last week is greening nicely again and the many Holstein heifers are quite pleased with the excellent grazing to be found in the pastures they roam. In Barbara’s garden the potatoes and broccoli are lush and green, while the sweet corn we just planted is, no doubt, about to poke it’s head up to survey the landscape.

The Strawberries
This array of bounty across the Farm helps us to balance this one little issue; ripe strawberries don’t like rain. đ Some berries will no doubt be spoiled but the good news is that there is still ripening fruit and the several days rest should result in good picking for several days.
We are going to do everything we can to keep the Pick Your Own Strawberry patch open for a week and a half or so…
Strawberries picked this morning…
We’ve had a good strawberry season; today is our 5th Saturday being opened. With the cool weather weâre having it looks like we could go another week or two. No question, though, we are in the end game and already looking beyond strawberries to sweetcorn harvest and the transition of our strawberry beds into a pumpkin patch!
Yoders’ Farm Maze Coming Fall 2013
The Fall
The corn maze planning is well underway (more info soon…), with software and GPS equipment purchased to carve out an intricate labyrinth of complexity. Don’t worry, we plan to check the maze nightly for lost wanderers… đ Oh, a question. When is a corn maze not a corn maze? Hmmm… Answer: when it’s also a sorghum maze! With advice from maze experts we plan to inter-seed sorghum seed in our corn to thicken the stand and preclude peeking through walls!

The Tomatoes
In other news, Barbara and I enjoyed a rare sit down hour or two last evening while seeding tomatoes for our new fall greenhouse. (The new greenhouse is still unbuilt!)
We chose to go with the Heritage and Trust varieties and seeding puts us into a 7 week construction window!! The plan is to have cucumbers and plenty of tomatoes for our Grand reopening/Fall Family Farm Day in early October. We are working to finalize the date; stay tuned!
